This site is great for a detailed step-by-step overview: https://microcosmos.foldscope.com/?p=17901
Collection of moss/lichen/algae:
Carefully document sites of collection of moss/lichen/algae:
-
If possible, maximize diversity:
-
of moss/lichen/algae species,
-
of substrate (ground, tree, log, rock, water)
-

1. Once you locate a sample that you want to collect, label a bag (either plastic or paper is fine) with the following information so that samples can be easily matched to photos:GPS location (latitude and longitude)

a. Use phone to record latitude and longitude
-
compass app or map app will do this
-
to convert Degrees/Minutes/Seconds to decimal: https://www.latlong.net/degrees-minutes-seconds-to-decimal-degrees

b. Collector information (name, date, sample and photo number)
-
Please label with the following format: TT_your intials_date_sample (a-z)_1 or 2 (1 is broader photo, 2 is close up photo – see below)
-
Example: TT_BFM_05May2020_a_1

2. Photograph location in nature
-
Take two photos, one closer up and one further out so that surroundings are visible.
-
Label photos with the following format: TT_your intials_date_sample (a-z)_1 or 2 (1 is broader photo, 2 is close up photo)
-
These photos will be uploaded when you complete the Tardigrade Collection Form below.
3. Place sample in a bag (do not seal the bag, mold will grow in a sealed bag if there is moisture)
4. Complete Tardigrade Collection Form: https://airtable.com/shrJEfEumWvOappcz
(You will need to complete a separate form for each sample you collect.)
